For those new to this story, here's a recap. Alexei and Zakhar were old friends until Zakhar went away ten years ago. Now he's back but not exactly getting a warm welcome from Alexei.
You can catch up with the story from the opening scene.

For this week's snippet I've switched over to Alexei's POV and as you can see, he hasn't always been so pissed off with Zakhar.

The first time I met Zakhar had been in the dining hall of the Special Residential School, a place for minors aged three to eighteen.
He’d been shuffling from the queue at the counter, his plastic tray clutched so tight his knuckles had been white, a cute, chubby boy with sandy blond hair and freckles.
He must have been about eight then. None of the other kids his age would let him sit at their table. He’d looked lost and I couldn’t resist getting his attention.
“Hey kid!” I’d waved, indicating for him to come over. “Sit with us.”
