For those new to this story, here's a recap. Alexei and Zakhar were old friends until Zakhar went away ten years ago. Now he's back but not exactly getting a warm welcome from Alexei.

Adrenaline spiked and my heart nearly exploded in my chest.
Damn, where did the weapon come from?
He must have had it on the desk, in front of the open laptop where it would’ve been obscured from my view. The unconcealed guns worn by his security team had distracted me into thinking they were the only physical threats.
What a foolish rookie mistake to make and not something expected from a seasoned pro like me.
The image of Alexei as a respectable business man had duped me, after all. Or perhaps, at a granular level in my subconscious mind, I'd allowed myself to think that he would never let any harm come to me—something he'd always done in the past.
