For those new to this story, here's a recap. Alexei and Zakhar were old friends until Zakhar went away ten years ago. Now he's back but not exactly getting a warm welcome from Alexei.

I should’ve heeded the warning, should’ve kept my mouth shut. But I remembered the laws of the streets we’d grown up in. Whoever said ‘the meek shall inherit the earth’ had never lived in an orphanage or on the streets. The meek inherited jack all shit.

Not about to play lamb to Alexei’s lion, I mocked him, “That why you need all these men to protect you?”

In a flash, Alexei shot off his chair, gun in right hand pointed to my forehead. “I don’t need anyone to protect me from you.”
